END MPP
END MPP is a typeface created to raise awareness about an alarming change an immigration policy created under the Trump Administration in 2018. The policy, "Migrant Protection Protocols" (MPP), also referred to as "Remain in Mexico," required asylum seekers at the U.S. southern border to remain outside the United States in Mexico, which often left them in extreme danger. At the border, there has been case upon case of kidnappings, extortion, and other serious abuses while migrants live in tent camps.
The Biden Administration attempted to repeal this policy, and after a temporary injunction by a federal court in Texas, the Supreme Court finally allowed the Biden administration to end MPP. The policy was officially terminated in October of 2022. Today, asylum seekers waiting in Mexico for their appointments are now able to cross into the U.S. on the day of their hearings and remain in the U.S. while they await the outcome of their case.
Inspiration
The typeface was inspired by U.S. immigration policy protest posters and banners, the Chicano Farm Workers' Movement, various Latin American typefaces, and the form of the border wall itself. The contrast in weight is used to mimic the tall posts of fencing and the vast width of the wall. END MPP was created to be used as a display font in English and Spanish.
